Chapel of St Thomas a Becket

Brentwood originated as an open space made in the woods by burning trees. Consequently Brentwood originates from burnt wood thus became Brentwood.  Brentwood provided as a stop-off point approximately a one day's journey from the Thames for pilgrims travelling from East Anglia to the shrine of Thomas Becket at Canterbury. The original church building dedicated to St Thomas in Brentwood was a chapel built around 1221 to serve these pilgrims.

The chapel now resembles ruins with just parts of the tower and chancel wall remaining. Situated within Brentwood's High Street shopping area and the entrance to The Baytree Centre this is just 2 miles from the Holiday Inn Brentwood.

Fancy making a weekend of it whilst visiting the many historical attractions in and around Brentwood, the Holiday Inn Brentwood is perfectly situated as it is just two miles from the chapel.
